Chapter 24, 25, 26

Chapter 24
Tina walks into Cole’s room and is so stunned by the sight, she almost faints.  Michael tried to prepare her for what she would see but it’s much different when she actually saw him lying there.  Pastor James stands and embraces Ellen.  Then he and Michael stand outside the door and talk.
Tina gently takes Cole’s hand in hers as Ellen stands beside her.  “This is harder than I thought.  I can hardly look at him.”  Tina sighs as Ellen puts her arm around her.
“It’s ok sweetie.  Just take your time.  It’s never easy seeing the man you love like this.  It was hard for me all those years ago.  Just picture him in your mind as you last saw him,” Ellen tells her.
Tina kisses Cole’s hand and breaks down falling into Ellen’s arms.  Ellen embraces her.  “It’s ok dear.  Let it out.”  James walks in and embraces them both as he prays over them and Cole.  When he finishes, they all walk to the hallway where Michael is talking to the doctor.
He introduces the doctor to Tina.  “Tina, this is Doctor Harold Armstrong.  He’s our best doctor.  Doctor Armstrong, this is Doctor Tina Carpenter, Cole’s fiancé.”
Tina smiled as she greeted Doctor Armstrong.  That was the first time she had been referred to as Cole’s fiancé.  “Ok Doctor Armstrong, give it to me straight.  What’s the prognosis?”
“Well Doctor Carpenter, as I am sure Michael has told you, last night he had about a 30% chance of any recovery.  Today I’d say getting in the neighborhood of 50/50.”
Tina turns and follows the doctor into the room as they all surround the bed.  Tina speaks.  “Doctor, tell me the issues we are looking at.  And please call me Tina.”
Doctor Armstrong pulls back the cover.  “Tina, as you can see, both legs have extensive damage.  Right now he is in danger of losing the left.  We are positive we have saved the right.  Also the left arm needs several skin grafts and has a shattered wrist.  His shoulder here has damage from what seems to be a previous but to too long before on the fly surgery.”
Tina smiles as Ellen when he says this.  “Ok but all of this he can live through,” Tina says. “What’s the big issues?”
“Here’s the hard part,” Doctor Armstrong Continues.  “He has several bullets in his abdomen and chest.  He has severe internal damage.  Almost all the organs have some sort of damage.  The first surgery was to repair the heart, lungs, intestines, and kidneys along with any other life threatening injuries.  In the morning, I hope to begin to clean up and repair the rest.  We will also work on his left arm and leg.  If we other things are so bad that I can.  He does have head injuries but I don’t see them as life threatening.  There is some swelling of the brain but it has gone down.  Right now his come is induced until we feel confident he can function on his own.  As you see from the machines, he is on just about every type to keep his body functioning.  I hope to start to slowly weaning him off those about 24-36 hours after tomorrow’s surgery if it all goes well.  That will be the true test.  That’s about it.  Any questions?”
Tina takes a deep breath, “Wow!  How is he even alive?”
Doctor Armstrong laughs, “The man upstairs is looking out for him.  That’s the only explanation I have.  By all medical standards, he never should have made it.  Now if you don’t have anything else, I am going to get things set up for his tests this afternoon.
Tina shakes his hand, “Thank you doctor.  I appreciate your honesty.  Thank you for taking care of him.”
“You’re welcome,” he says as he leaves.
Tina plops down in the chair next to Cole’s bed.  “Ellen, how do it do this?  I feel even more helpless here than at home.  I can’t do it!”
Ellen puts her hand on Tina’s shoulder, “Yes you can dear.  Just lean on the Lord.  Let’s pray for strength.  Lord, we come to you now thanking you for sparing Cole’s life to this point.  We ask that you continue to heal him.  Father, right now I pray for my beloved sister Tina.  Give her strength to endure.  When her strength fades, I ask that you carry her through.  Allow her to rest in your arms as long as she needs to get through this time.  I pray she would be even stronger on the other side.  Walk with her, help her, carry her, whatever she needs.  I thank you in advance for the endurance you will provide.  Amen.”
Tina stands and gives Ellen a hug.  “Thank you.  I don’t know what I would do if you weren’t here.”
Ellen hugs her, “You are welcome, sweetie.  Now how about we go get something to eat?  Not much we can do here.”
James speaks up, “Good idea, I am starved.  Michael will call if there is any change.  Right Michael?”
Michael laughs, startled at the question, “Yes of course.  As long as you bring me back something.”
“Will do.  Thanks Michael, you are a good man,” Tina says with a hug.
“Wow, now I know I’ve hit the big time.  You are welcome.  Cole has become like a son to me.  I have seen him through everything these last few years and I don’t intend to stop now.”
After lunch, they head back to the hospital for Cole’s round of tests.  Dr. Armstrong comes in to explain what they are going to do and about how long it should take.  He then helps the transport team with all of Cole’s machines.  “Be back in a bit,” he says as they leave the room.  Pastor James just sits and waits as Ellen and Tina go for a walk and chat.
After about forty five minutes, they see them wheeling Cole back into the room.  As they round the corner, Tina asks Dr. Armstrong, “How’d it go?”
“Pretty well,” he answers.  “We will be able to do the surgery tomorrow.  If all goes well, I don’t expect any more to be done on the organs but a few more on the arm and leg.”
Tina gets excited.  “Wow, that’s good.  What time will you start?”
“I am going to get started about 6AM.  I expect it to be about four hours but you never know.  You haven’t heard the best part yet.  Both lungs are fully inflated and I am decreasing his Oxygen.  I am going to have them decrease if by five about every two hours.  I want to do it slowly to make sure they can handle it.  My hope is that by tomorrow evening, he will be off the vent completely and using a little through the nose.”
Tina starts to cry as she hugs Ellen, “He’s gonna make it.”
Dr. Armstrong quickly speaks up, “Whoa! Not too fast.  Yes his chances are improving but he still has a long long way to go.  Let’s get him through this surgery first.  Then we can hopefully celebrate.”
Tina turns and takes a deep breath.  “Yes you are right.  Sorry.  That’s just really good news.  You just gave us some hope in all of this.”
Dr. Armstrong puts his hand on her shoulder.  “Glad I could help.  Now visit for a bit and then I am going to ask that you let him rest.  Come back in the morning.  I’ll be around about 5:30 or so.”
“Thank you Dr. Armstrong,” Tina says as he leaves.  She takes Cole by the hand.  “Cole, did you hear that?  You are going to be just fine.  You will be holding Isaac and Laura before long.  Then we will be married and be one happy family.  You got this!”  Tina feels a slight squeeze on her hand.  Her doctor instincts tell her its just a normal muscle flex.  Her heart tells her it’s Cole agreeing with her.  She smiles and holds to the latter as she leans in a kisses him on the cheek.  They leave for the evening knowing the next day will be long and tiring.
After dinner, she sits in Ellen and James’ living room and calls Cole’s parents, her parents, and Pam and gives them an update.  She then talks to Isaac for a bit before heading off to bed still feeling Cole squeeze her hand.

Chapter 25
Noon rolls around and still no word.  “It was supposed to be over two hours ago,” Tina says and she frantically paces the floor.  Finally about 30 minutes later, a nurse comes out with an update.  “Sorry for the delay,” she begins.  “We ran into some complications.  Dr. Armstrong is working to correct some unforeseen issues.  He wanted me to tell you that it will be about another two hours.”  With that she turns and walks away.
Tina sighs as she plops into the nearest chair.  “I knew this was going too well.  Lord, please don’t let him die!  Not like this, not here, not yet.  Please Lord, just let him live!”  Tina starts to cry as Ellen comforts her.
“It’s ok dear.  The Lord has a plan for that man and you and those 2 precious kids.  Hold on to that.  Lean on Him, trust Him.”
After a few minutes, Tina finally stands up, “I need some fresh air.  I’ll be back in a bit.”
Ellen stands to follow but James catches her arm.  “Let her go Ellen.  She needs some time.  She’ll be fine.”  Ellen sits down next to James and snuggles in close.
Almost two hours later, Dr. Armstrong appears form the OR.  “Sorry about the delay folks.  We ran into some issues,” he says as he looks around for Tina.  “Where’s Dr. Carpenter?”
“Here I am,” Tina says charging up the hall, smiling.  “So Dr. Armstrong, when can I take him home?”
“Whoa there Tina!  One baby step at a time.  We need to talk about what just happened in there.  Please let’s sit.”  They all sit and he continues.  “I am just gonna give it to you straight.  Things did not go as well as I hoped.  Cole arrested twice on the table.  The first time we were able to get his heart started pretty quickly.  The second time took several minutes.  I almost called it.  I finally got him back and had to go in and repair some more heart damage and then replace a valve.  He is currently getting a transfusion. Also we had to remove his left kidney and his spleen.  I also had to remove part of his intestine.  He can live a fairly normal life without these.  Now the left wrist has been reconstructed and we put several pins in it.  The plastic surgeon will work on the skin grafts for the left arm later.  Any questions so far?”
Tina shakes her head no and he continues. “The lungs look great and still working well.  However, the issue is the left lower leg.  There was so much damage.  We have worked hard to repair it but the leg is not responding.  The team had to amputate below the knee.  The good news is the right leg is looking great.  At this point, I’d say he is mostly out of the woods and has about 70% full recovery. The true tell will really be after we slowly take him off of all the machines.  That’s about it.  Questions?”
Tina sits back in her chair and tries to comprehend everything she has heard.  She finally speaks.  “Doctor, I know you think I am jumping the gun here but I assure you he will be fine.  I will take my Cole home to live that long happy life.  So my question is what support is he still on and what Is the time line of everything?”
Dr. Armstrong half chuckles as Tina’s comment until he looks at her and realizes how serious she is.  “Tina, I appreciate your confidence.  He is on three main supports right now. First is the renal machine.  He should only be on that till the morning until his body gets use to functioning on one kidney.  Second is the blood machine for the transfusion.  That should be gone in a few hours when the transfusion is complete.  Third is the ventilator.  After what happened on the table, I want to be 100% sure before we take him off.  He is still very weak and I don’t want to put him in any more stress.  Hopefully that will be gone tomorrow as well.  I also of course have him on a heart monitor and regulator.  I want to make sure the valve does well and we have not more heart issues.  I want to keep him on that for a few days just to make sure.  That’s it.”
Tina stands as she answers, “no offense to you doctor but my confidence is not in you but in God.  He will heal Cole.  The left arm, how much function will he have?  Has the left leg already been taken?”
He replies, “Yes the left leg was amputate here, just below the knee.  We were able to repair the knee which will make things easier for him to lean to walk with a prosthetic.  As for the left arm, he should have pretty good function.  I’d say at least 75%.  The hand and fingers may not go all the way out or all the way in but should have some grip ability.  I am optimistic for things.  If there is nothing else, I will let you go.  He should be out of recovery soon and we will take him to his room.”  He stands and begins to leave.
“One more thing,” Ellen says.  “When do you hope to bring him out of the coma?”
“We will see how things go tomorrow and then begin that process.  Right now his body just needs to rest and recover so I am going to give him time.  Now, I’ve got another surgery to prepare for if you will excuse me.  I’ll be in this evening to check on him and give you an update.”
Tina turns to Ellen and James, “Thank you both for being here.  How about we grab lunch.  My treat.  Getting out of these walls will do us all some good.”
James agrees,” Sounds good to me.  Let’s go.”  They all head to lunch.
Walking to the café just down from the hospital, Tina has a new spring in her step.  Finally Ellen speaks up, “Tina girl, what has gotten in to you?  It’s like you are a different person from this morning.”
Tina smiles as the sit at a table.  “Ellen, I went on that walk and God spoke to me and showed me things.  He showed me Cole living a full life and raising our family and serving God by answering a new call in his life.  Both of us actually.  He spoke directly to me and said ‘Tina, Cole is mine.  You are mine.  Your family is mine.  I have wonderful plans for all of you.  Trust in me.  Leave Cole in My hands and I will get everyone through this.  I am here and this is all part of My plan.  Trust in Me!’  So I did.  I gave it all to Him right there and answered His call in my life.  I’ve never felt better.”  She smiles as Ellen squeezes her hand.
“I am so happy dear.  I know God has great things in store for you.  Wherever He leads you.”
Tina just smiles.  They chat over lunch and enjoy their time together.  Before long they realize they have been talking over two hours and decided they better head back to the hospital.  James and Ellen walk Tina back to the hospital lobby before leaving to head home to do a few things.  Michael catches the elevator door just before it closes.  “Sorry I couldn’t be here this morning.  I had a meeting I could not miss.  How did it go?”
Tina proceeds to tell him everything Dr. Armstrong told them. She finishes just as the get to Cole’s room.  “Wow,” she says.  “He just looks so much better.  His color is really coming back.  I think he’ll be back to himself before too long.  Speaking of which Michael, now that it’s just us, I need to ask you something.  Is Cole finished with the agency?  Please tell me it’s all over now.”
Michael takes a deep breath as they sit, “Tina, I really wish I could answer that.  Unfortunately, it’s not my decision.  As long as he recovers, he still belongs to the agency.  Cole has a very special set of skills that is extremely hard to find.  They aren’t just going to give that up.”
Tina stands up and pulls back the sheet to expose Cole’ legs.  “Michael, look!  What good can he do on missions like this?  He can’t keep doing all of this, even with the best prosthetic.  They can’t ask that!”  She covers him back up and takes Cole’s hand.  “No Michael, he is done.  It’s my time now!”
Michael stands up beside her.  “I wish that were true but they will find a way.  It may not be in the field.  He could be in communications, intelligence, or even training.  They just won’t let him go even like this.  I wish it were that easy.  Look, it’s even the same for me.  In a few weeks I will be officially retired but I am still theirs and if the need arises, they call me back.  That’s the way they work.  No one knows that going in but once you are in, it’s for LIFE!”
Tina gently runs her hands through Cole’s hair.  “We will find a way Michael.”  She kisses Cole’s lips softly and just looks as him as she holds his hand.  “We will find a way,” she mumbles over and over again.

Chapter 26
Michael is reading the paper and Tina is asleep leaning on Cole’s bed when Dr. Armstrong comes by for his evening rounds.  He gentle wakes Tina.  “Tina, Tina.  I have some good news for you.”
Tina squints her eyes open.  “Oh, Dr. Armstrong.  Thank you.  What’s the news?”  Tina stands up and tries to get the cobwebs out as he begins to speak.
“All his latest test look good.  He is getting stronger.  I am going to go ahead and remove the vent and just give him some oxygen through the nose.  I will be on the flood for the next several hours to monitor him.  If he does well with that, then first thing tomorrow we will remove the rest of the machines.  If that all goes well, we can hopefully start the process of taking him out of the induced coma later tomorrow.”
Tina almost jumps for joy, “Thank you doctor!  Thank you!”
“You’re welcome,” he says as Tina hugs him.  “Let me go get the nurse and we will get the vent out.”
He leaves and shortly returns with the respiratory nurse.  “Now Tina, as you know this isn’t pretty so if you need to turn away or leave, you may.”
Tina laughs, “Thanks but I think I’ll be ok.”  She moves to the foot of the bed and watches as the nurse puts the nose piece on and turns on the oxygen flow.
“Not too much now,” Dr. Armstrong reminds her.  “We want to make sure he can do most of it on his own.”  He then reaches over and turns off the vent.  “Ok here he go.”  He flips the switch and the once loud machine goes silent.  “I am going to monitor breathing for a bit before we remove it just to make sure.”
Dr. Armstrong listens to Cole’s lungs.  “A little raspy but that’s to be expected.  Should clear up in a bit.”  He continues to listen.  “There, getting better.  Nice and strong.  Tina would you care to listen?”  He smiles as he hands her his stethoscope.
Tina listens and smiles. “Best thing I have heard in days.  Nice and clear.  Big and strong.”  She hands it back to Dr. Armstrong and steps back.
“Ok, nurse,” Dr. Armstrong continues.  “Let’s do this on my count.  Ready, 1, 2, 3, and out.”
Tina almost cries as they pull the vent tube out.  She’s not sure if it is from joy, fear, or something else.  She watches with baited breath as Dr. Armstrong listens to Cole’s lungs again.  “Beautiful!” He smiles.  “Tina, it sounds good.  I will be around checking on other patients but will be back in a couple of hours for a recheck.  Call if you need me.  They both sound strong!”  He leaves the room.
Just as he leaves, Cole’s heart monitor starts to beep as his heart rate drops.  Michael steps into the hall and calls for Dr. Armstrong.
“Don’t panic,” he says as he rushes back in.  He listens to Cole’s lungs and heart.  This sometimes happens as the heart readjust to the oxygen levels.  He is not in a danger zone yet.  Let’s monitor and see if it comes back up.  If after about a minute it’s still dropping then we have and issue.  It should rebound.”  He listens.  “Lungs sound normal.  Heart a little slow a little skip.  There should be coming back up.”  He turns to the monitor.  The number slowly comes up and soon the beeping stops.  “There, back in normal range.  As I said just a readjustment.  He should be fine now.  Just monitor and if it drops again have them page me.”  He leaves to finish his rounds.
Michael walks over to Tina.  “Tina, I know this isn’t the best time to tell you this but I talked to the agency while you are asleep.”  Tina gives him a glare.
“Michael, please don’t say what I think you are going to say.  They can’t do this!”
Michael puts his hand on Tina’s shoulder, “Tina, I am sorry.  There is no other way.  They said as soon as he is awake and able to travel, he has to report to headquarters.  He has no choice.”
Tina turns away, “Don’t they realize he will need months of intense therapy?  They just can’t take him away.”
Michael puts his arm around her, “Tina, they will do his therapy.  He has NO CHOICE, nor do I.  I am sorry.”
“They can’t!  They can’t!”  Tina continues to sob as she leans over on Cole.  Michael decided to leave her be and leaves the room.
Just after 6pm, Dr. Armstrong comes back to check on Cole.  “Tina everything looks and sounds good.  Listen, you go to Ellen and James’ and get some rest and we will start the process in the morning.  I promise to call you with any changes and I won’t start without you in the morning.  I’ll be in around 7AM to get started.”
“Thank you Dr. Armstrong,” she replies.  “I really could use some time away.  Promise to call me?”
“You have my word,” He replies with a smile.
“Great see you at 7 AM.”  Tina kisses Cole and leaves.  On her way down the hall, she sees Michael sitting alone in the lobby.  As she goes over to him, she realizes he is crying.  “Michael, are you ok?  Look, I didn’t mean to get upset earlier.  I am sorry.  It’s not your fault.”
Michael stands up and hugs her.  “It’s not you Tina.  I’ve just been sitting here praying for Cole and asking God for a way out.  I know how much he wants out of the agency.  I know that it can’t really happen.  So I just pray!”
Tina motions for him to sit, “Michael, over the years that I have followed the Lord, I have learned a lot of things.  The most important one being that if God wants something to happen, NOTHING or NO ONE can stop it.  I know God wants me to marry Cole.  I also know that he has to be out of the agency for that to happen.  So, I know that God will make it happen.  I don’t know how but He will.  I let me emotions get the best of me earlier and I forgot that.  So, I just have to trust that He will do it.  It may not happen when I want but it WILL happen when God sees fit.  Let’s go get a nice home cooked meal and Ellen and James’ and relax.  I told her we’d be there.”
Michael stands and hugs Tina wiping tears from his eyes, “Tina, you are one strong lady.  I can see why Cole loves you so much.  You are really something else.”
Tina smiles as they walk to the elevator.

Chapters 21, 22, 23

Chapter 21
Matthew’s surgery goes well.  Dr. Gordon is pleased with the results and expects him to make a full recovery.  They decide that he will need to stay in the area for at least three weeks before traveling back home.  Tina tells them to stay with her.  Although Suzy must return home for work and wedding planning, Hazel and Matt stay along with Ellen and the kids.  Hazel explains the situation with Cole and the kids to Matt on the drive to Tina’s house.
Tina arrives before them and talks to Ellen and the kids about Matt.  She tells Isaac to be gentle with Matt while he recovers.  Isaac is excited to meet his grandfather.  So much so that he can’t sit still like Tina asked him to do when Hazel and Matt pull into the drive.
Tina walks out to help Matt out of the car.  Isaac stands at the door, jerking with excitement.  Finally, he can’t take it anymore and rushes out.  Hazel grabs him up before he knocks Matt over.  “Whoa, there buckaroo!”
Isaac hugs her.  “GiGi!”  Hazel turns to Matt.
“Matt, I’d like you to meet your grandson, Isaac.”  Matt smiles and gently takes Isaac in his arms.
“Hey buddy, I’m your PawPaw.”
Isaac hugs him.  “Hey PawPaw.  Sorry feel bad.  Be better?”
Matt laughs as he puts Isaac down.  “I will do my best but only if you help.”
“You got it!”  Isaac yells as he takes Matt by the hand and helps him up the porch.
Ellen is in the kitchen preparing lunch when they all come in.  Isaac rushed over to her.  “Nana Ellen, meet PawPaw.”
Ellen wipes her hands as Isaac takes her by the finger.  “Lead the way.”
Isaac pulls her over to Matt just as he comes through the door.  “This PawPaw,” Isaac says as he grabs Matt’s leg.
“Pleased to meet you PawPaw,” Ellen laughs as she extends her hand.
“Matt Connor, ma’am and the pleasure is mine,” Matt says as he kisses her hand.
“Well, I see where Cole gets his charm and his good looks.  I’m Ellen Greene.”  Everyone makes small talk as they sit down for lunch.
After Lunch, Matt meets Laura and instantly falls in love.  “Tina, I can see why you took on these two.  They are precious,” he says as Laura giggles at him.  “Now, let’s talk about Cole,” Matt continues.  “What’s the deal?”
Tina looks at Isaac sitting in her lap.  He’s fast asleep so she lays him on the couch next to her.  “Matt, we really don’t know much,” Tina begins.  “He’s MIA but the way things look he probably didn’t survive.  We will may never know for sure.”
Tina has had so many emotions in the last few days.  She is so emotionally drained, her eyes don’t even water.  She sighs and leans back.  Finally she stands up.  “I can’t do this!  Please excuse me.”  Tina rushes out of the room.
“Poor girl, she’s been on a roller coaster the last few days,” Ellen says breaking the silence.
“I’m sorry,” said Matt.  “I didn’t mean to upset her.  I just wanted to know.”
Hazel takes Matt’s hand.  “It wasn’t you hun.  I think everything is just taking its toll.  Us being here isn’t helping.  Maybe we should find a place to stay.”
“She won’t like that,” Ellen pipes in.  As hard as it is to have you here, I think she enjoys it as well.  Makes her feel like she’s helping Cole in some way.  Just give it a day or so and see how it goes,” she suggests.
Matt agrees, “She’s right Hazel.  I think she needs us.  Besides, I like being PawPaw!”
Hazel laughs, “Yes it is nice.  I am going to go check on her.”  Hazel leaves and finds Tina sitting on the floor by her bed, face buried in her hands.  She knocks quietly on the door.  “Tina, may I come in?”
Tina looks up as she wipes a few tears, “Please Hazel, Wanna sit?”
Hazel sits next to Tina on the floor and begins to speak.  “Tina, I am not sure what to do or say to ease your feelings but I do want you to know that I love you just like my own and that I am her to help in any way I can.”
Tian sighs, “Hazel, thank you.  That really means a lot.  I just don’t know anymore.  I have all these emotions that I don’t even know what to feel anymore.  I just don’t know.”
They both sit in silence for a few minutes before Tina finally speaks.  “I can’t raise these kids by myself.  What am I gonna do?  This is not the way it’s supposed to be.  I can’t do this!”
Hazel takes Tina’s hand.  “Believe me dear, I know how you feel.  I also know that God promises not to put more on us than we can bare.  He gives us His help and gives others around us to help as well.  Look T, I don’t care what they say, Cole IS alive and he WILL be back.  I just know it.  I don’t know how but I do.  Just hang in there.”
“Hazel, I don’t know how you do it.  “You seem so calm and together,” Tina says as she stands and walks to the window.
Hazel laughs, “It’s all because I trust the Man upstairs.  He gives me the strength and I know He’s in charge of it all.  It took many years of crying and emotions but I finally learned to give it to Him.”
Just then Tina’s phone rings.  “Dr. Carpenter,” she answers.  “Hey mom.  Yes I am doing ok and Matt is recovering.” … “Yes the kids are great and I can’t wait for you and dad to meet them.  You guys free for dinner Friday?” … “Great, say 6:00 at my place?”  … “ Ok see you then.  Love you.”  Tina hangs up and turns to Hazel.  “You and Matt up for dinner with my folks day after tomorrow?”
Hazel gets up and hugs Tina.  “Sure sweetie.  I’ll even help cook.  I can’t wait to see them.  It’s been ages.  You ok?”
Tina turns back to the window, “Yeah, just one more time I have to explain all of this.  I mean I told them some on the phone when I Got back but so much has happened since.  I know they are going to ask.  I am not sure how many more times I can explain things.  I relive it each time.”
Hazel puts her arm around Tina.  “You just leave that up to me.  I’ll have a mother to mother talk.  Friday night is just about relaxing and having fun with your family and those kids.  Don’t you worry.”
Tina hugs Hazel.  “You are too much!  Now speaking of kids, lets see what those two precious things are up too!”
Hazel and Tina walk back into the living room to find Isaac snuggled up to Matt who is holding Laura and watching cartoons.  They stand in the doorway and smile until Ellen announces lunch is ready.
Isaac pops up and runs to the kitchen.  “Come PawPaw!”
Matt laughs, “Be right there buddy!  Ladies could one of you come get Laura?”
Tina walks over and takes her and helps Matt up.  “Ya’ll go ahead and eat.  I am gonna feed her and put her down.  Hazel tell them about Friday!”
Over lunch, Hazel tells them about Tina’s folks coming for dinner.  She is interrupted by a knock at the door.  “Every one keep eating,” Tina says on her way out of the room.  “I’ll get it.”  Tina walks to the door while feeding Laura.  “Hey Pam, come on in and join us for lunch,” she says opening the door and hugging her sister.
“I can’t stay long,” Pam says.  “Just on my lunch hour and thought I’d stop by and see how things are.”
Isaac runs up and grabs Pam’s leg.  We great Aunt Pam.  Miss you!”
“I missed you too big guy,” she says picking him up and hugging him.
“Aunt Pam, Me PawPaw.  You see!”  Pam puts Isaac down as he pulls her into the kitchen towards Matt.  Tina puts Laura down for a nap and joins them.
“Hey Pam, got any plans Friday evening?  I mean I don’t know if you might have a hot date or something,” Tina laughs.
Pam punches her arm.  “As a matter of fact I do have a date but it’s on Saturday.  So what’s Friday?”
“Mom and dad are coming over for dinner and I thought you might join us,” Tina replies.  “About 6.”
“I’d love to,” Pam says.  “Now, what does a girl have to do to get something to drink?”
Pam joins them for lunch as they all sit down and just have a good time chatting and watching Isaac play.  Soon Tina all but forgets all about the emotions fighting inside her.
Almost 3 weeks had gone by since Cole went MIA.  Tina was starting to return to her normal routine and Ellen was preparing to return to Jamaica.  Michael had called a few days ago and thought things were safe now.  He told them nothing had gone on since their last contact with Phiny and he felt sure she had moved on.  Tina had decided to hire a nanny to help with the kids after Ellen and Cole’s parents all leave at the end of the week.  They would all have one last dinner together along with Tina’s parents, Pam and Missy’s family.  It seemed life had continued and everyone was finally settling into the new normal.

Chapter 22
Michael was sitting in his office finishing some paperwork.  The last month had been the hardest.  He stared at the paper in his hand and knew he was making the right decision.  He read the title out loud, “Official Retirement Statement”.  He sighed.  “In 30 days I’ll be done.  Just desk work till then.  Fifteen long years.”  He continued to think out loud.  “I knew Cole was special and promised myself he’d be the last.  So he is.”  As Michael signed his name at the bottom, there was a knock at his door.  “Yes?”
“Sorry to bother you sir,” says his assistant, “but there is an urgent call for you on the secure line.”
“Thank you Debbie.  Patch it through,” he says finishing signing his name.  Michael picks up the phone, “Michael 1427.”
He hears nothing but static.  “Hello?  Hello?”  He strains hard and hears a faint voice.
“Michael, its Cole.  You gotta find me.  I don’t have much time. “
Michael perks up and begins tracing Cole’s call.  “Cole, are you hurt?”
He hears the pain in Cole’s voice.  “Yes, very bad.  Not sure how long I have.  You gotta help.”
“Cole just stay with me.  I am working as fast as I can.  Can you give me any idea of where you are?”
Cole moans in pain.  “Trees but I hear a waterfall.”  Cole screams in pain.  “Please hurry!”
Michael hits the emergency button on the desk to summons the Operation Center.  “Cole, I am going to switch over to Ops mode so I can make my way to the center.  Just keep talking.  Tell me anything you remember, see or hear.”
“Waterfall, birds, trees, the sun, birds.”  Cole stops and Michael knows he is fading fast.
He continues as he sits down at the Ops Center.  “Cole you said you see the sun.  Where is the sun to you?  Can you tell me?”  Michael calculates the time of day in Jamaica and knows that the info will help him determine which side of the island Cole is on.  Since Cole is calling on a burn phone, it is taking much longer to trace.  Michael asks again, “Cole, where is the sun?”
“Almost 3 o’clock,” comes a faint voice.  Michael punches the information into the computer which quickly calculates which side of the island Cole is on.
“Cole, listen,” Michael continues, “do you hear anything else besides birds and the waterfall?  I am trying to pinpoint your location.  Listen carefully.”
The line goes silent and Michael thinks he lost Cole.  “Cole!  Cole are you there?”
After about 30 seconds of panic he hears faintly, “Choppers, lots of Choppers.”
Another agent in Ops feverishly punches all the information into the computer as Michael continues to talk to Cole.  They soon decide Cole must he near the old Bath Airfield that was turned into a helicopter training facility near the southern part of the island.
“Cole, I have a team in Kingston.  They are heading out your way.  They should be close to you in about 15 minutes or so by the chopper.  Do you have anything to signal them with?”  Michael waits for a response, hoping to get a good one.
After a few soft moans, Cole speaks.  “Not that I know of.”
“Ok, we are gonna do this the old-fashioned way,” Michael continues.  “I’ve got a general location through what you have told me and what we are able to trace through your phone.  When the chopper is in your area, I will have them fly as low as possible to the trees.  You let me know when you hear or see it.  Can you do that?”
“Yes.  Michael, what about T and the kids?  Tell me,” Cole says through pain.
“Cole, they are safe.  They are all back in Texas waiting for you.  Don’t worry about them.  You just hang on.  Do it for them!  The chopper is approaching your area.  Do you hear them?”
Cole moans again, “I do hear a chopper that sounds closer than before.”
“That’s them Cole.  They are about there.  Keep listening and watching.  What about now?”  Michael says as the other agents relays the info to the chopper team.
“Starting to feel a breeze and hear louder,” Cole squeaks out.
Michael relays to the pilot to slow down as they are very close.  Cole squeaks out, “Chopper 100 yards to my 9.”
Michael continues, “Ok Cole, relaying to the team.  They should be right there.  You still hanging in?”  There is no answer.  Michael can only hear chopper noise.  “Cole you there?”  Still no answer.
Michael speaks to the chopper team commander.  “DogBone, have you located him?  I have no response from him.”
“Negative Sir.  Ground team still searching.”
Michael continues to try to get a response with Cole but does not succeed.
“Command, this is DogBone, we have him in our sight.  Approaching now.  Command, he is unconscious but alive, barely.  Assessing before moving to chopper.”
Michael sighs, “DogBone you say he is alive?”
“Affirmative commander, alive but very weak.  Strapping him ho extraction board.  Needs immediate medical attention.  Condition very critical to grave.”
Michael’s heart is racing as he listens to communications.  He says a silent prayer for Cole.
The team loads him in the chopper and rushes him to the nearest hospital where the trauma team is waiting.  They rush him into the emergency room and then to surgery.  Michael never leaves the Ops center.  He waits to hear the news.  Finally almost 5 hours after the rescue, he gets a call from the doctor.
“Michael, he’s still not out of the woods yet.  I have no idea how he even survived this long.  He’s out of the first of many surgeries.  If he makes it through the next 24 hours, we will assess our options.  However, that’s a huge if.  I’d say right now he has about a 30% change of survival.  There is a lot of damage.  I’ll keep you updated.”
Michael sighs, almost in tears, “Thank you doctor.”  Michael ends the call, sits in his chair and prepares himself for the call he needs to make.

Chapter 23
The entire family was gathered as Tina’s house for one last get together before Ellen, Matt and Hazel all head home.  Suzy flew in to help her parents on the trip.  Missy and her family are there along with Pam and Tina’s parents.  They are all there to enjoy each other’s company.  They chat and enjoy themselves all through dinner and well into the evening.
Ellen finally helps Tina put the kids down as everyone moves into the living room to relax and continue conversation.  Just as Tina takes a seat on the couch next to Pam, her phone rings.
“Dr. Carpenter,” she answers and then hears a familiar voice.
“Tina, its Michael.  Are Cole’s parents still at your house?”
“Yes,” Tina answers.  “As a matter of fact the entire family is her to see Ellen and them off tomorrow.  Why?  What’s up?”
“Well, I’ve got some news,” Michael says.  “I think they should hear it as well.  Can you put me on speaker?”
Tina is curious and laughs, “sure hang on.”  By now had gone silent as everyone knew who Michael was when Tina said his name.  She puts the phone on speaker, “Ok Michael, we are all listening.  Go ahead.”
Michael takes a deep breath and clears his throat.  “Ok well, don’t get your hopes up but we found him and he’s alive.”
Everyone in the room just stared at each other, stunned as Michael continued.  “He just endured five hours of surgery and if he makes it the next 24 hours, they will reassess him.  Right now they give him about 30% chance to live.  I know it’s not much but it’s something.”
By now there is not a dry eye in the room.  They are all holding hands.  Michael continues.  “Tina, I have you on the first flight out here in the morning.  I’ll send you the information.  I’ll meet you at the airport in Kingston.  That’s all.”
Through the tears, Tina answers, “Thank you Michael.  I look forward to finally meeting you tomorrow.  Thank you for everything.”
Everyone just sits in stunned silence, not really sure how to act or what to say.  Finally, Matthew slowly stands and starts to speak through his emotions.  “Father God, we thank you for your love, mercy and grace.  We thank you for sending your Son to die in our place.  Father, we come to you now grateful that our precious Cole has been found.  We ask that you touch him right now and that he knows your presence.  We ask that your will be done in his life and if possible that you would heal him and bring him back to us.  Please be with Tina and Ellen as they travel to Jamaica and Hazel, Suzy and myself as we travel as well.  Keep us all safe and allow us too to continue your work.  Be with Isaac and Laura as they continue to grow and learn in you.  In Jesus name, Amen.”
Matthew sits as he wipes tears from his eyes.  “Thank you Matt,” Tina says.  “Now we have to figure out about the kids.  What are we going to do with them while I’m gone?”
Pam speaks up, “I can take some time off and stay here with them.  I can work from home a little while, at least till we figure out something.”
Tina hugs her sister, “Thank Pam.  You’re a life saver.”
“We can help out as well,” Missy says.  “I know my two love having them to play with.  We can make it work T.  Don’t you worry.  We’ve got this!”
Tina’s mom also chimes in, “We’ll do our part as well.  See all covered!”
Tian laughs, “Great, they are gonna be spoiled rotten, but well taken care of.  Thank you all.”
After visiting for a little while longer, everyone finally says their goodbyes as Tina’s family leaves and Ellen, Matt, Hazel and Suzy all turn in.  Tina is left in the quietness to pack.  In the silence, Tina thinks about Cole.  She prays for him and his recovery.  She prays for Laura and Isaac.  She prays for Ellen and James and Matt, Hazel and Suzy.  She prays for Michael and even Phiny.  She thinks about what a great person Phiny could be if she would only give her life to Christ.  She prays one day that will happen.  Tina finally finishes and lays down for a few hours of sleep.

Everyone is up early ready to travel.  Pam arrives just as they are finishing breakfast.  Tina sits down to talk to Isaac.  “Ok buddy, Mommy has to leave for a few days.  Aunt Pam is going to stay here with you and Laura.  You be on your best behavior, ok?”
Isaac hugs her, “Mommy where go?  Help someone?  When back?”
Tina choose her words carefully.  “Yes buddy, I am going to help someone get better.  I am not sure when I’ll be back but I’ll call you every day, Promise!”
They all say goodbye as Ellen and Tina leave.  They both got on the early flight to Jamaica and arrive safely to meet Michael at the airport.  Tina finds him holding a sign with her name and walks over, “Michael?”
He smiles, “Yes Tina, nice to finally meet you.  And this must be Ellen.”
Tina shakes his hand.  “Great to finally meet you as well.  Yes this is Mrs. Ellen.  She was heading home today as well so she just got on the earlier flight with me.”
They start to walk to baggage claim as Michael speaks.  “Great!  Pastor James is actually at the hospital with Cole so I’ll take you both there.”
Tina asks, “How is he?”
“He has made it so far,” Michael replies.  “No real change.  They are hoping to do another surgery in the morning.  They are doing test and prep this evening to make sure.  So far he has been unresponsive.”
Tina and Ellen both grab their bags.  “Let’s go,” Tina says.  “I have been waiting to kiss him for almost 3 weeks and not sure how much longer I can stand it.”  They all laugh as they head to the car.

Chapter 18,19,20

Chapter 18
Michael was sitting at his Operations desk when a strange number came up on the caller I.D. for his none secure phone.  He hesitated then answered, “Michael.”
A familiar voice replied, “Your boy is dead.”
Michael piped up, “I don’t believe you, Phiny!”
Phiny laughed, “Believe it.  I emptied an entire mag into him and if that don’t kill him, the nature will.”
“I need proof,” Michael said.  “Where is he?”
“Well, if there is anything left by the time you get there, he is at the coordinate you will receive shortly in an email,” Phiny continued.  “Do me a favor, give me more of a challenge next time.”  With that she hangs up.
Michael immediately dials Cole’s phone.  “Hello?”
“Pastor Greene,” Michael replies.
“Yes, Michael?”
“Pastor Greene, have you heard from Cole?”
“No sir,” Pastor Greene answers.  “I have not.  Mr. Falcon is here though.  Ellen and the kids went to the states to be with Tina.”
Michael seems somewhat relived.  “Oh that’s good.”
“Yes, they left a while ago.  Now what can I do to help?”
Michael sounding somber, “Pray!  I know you are already.  Cole is missing.  Phiny claims she killed him but I don’t believe her.  I have sent men out to where she said we could find his body.  Stay where you are and keep this phone.  I’ll call when I know something.”  Michael hangs up.
James immediately begins praying for the entire situation.  Cole, Ellen, the kids, Tina, everyone!
Michael begins communication with the team he sent to the location Phiny sent him.  They are still a few minutes out and will check in as they approach.  Michael himself begins to pray.  He doesn’t know how he will react if Phiny is telling the truth.  He prays that Cole somehow survived.  He doesn’t want to think about having to call Tina.
Michael’s prayers are interrupted by the recovery team commander.  “Command, this is Dog Bone reporting.  We are approaching the sight.  We have lots of blood here.  No sign of a body.  We do have some pieces of clothing and a few other things.  We also have bullet fragments and what appears to be pieces of flesh.  Over here I see some large animal tracks and drag marks.  My team is taking data, pictures, and collecting evidence.  When complete we will bring it in for analysis.  Dog Bone out.”
Michael sank in his chair.  He could picture the scene in his mind and put the pieces together.  He pretty much knew what the data pointed to.  How he wished he was wrong.
A few hours later the lab called with results.  Michael walked slowly down the hall, took a deep breath and punched in the code to the lab door.
“What do we have Sam?”
Sam stood up and walked to his data center.  “Well, Michael, all of the blood collected at the scene is a match for Agent Donavan.  The pieces of clothing are just pieces of normal clothing bought at a local store.  From my inspection of the tears, they were torn by large animal teeth and claws.  The bullet fragments match those of the firearm given to Phiny.  The animal tracks seems to be that of local wild pigs.  So this is my analysis of what happened.  Phiny shot him multiple times and left him.  Later the smell attracted wild pigs and they attacked his body and probably drug him off to finish things.  We may never know for sure.”
Michael signed, “That’s what I was afraid of.  Thank you Sam.  Call me if you get anything else.  As of now, Agent Donavan is Officially MIA until I get proof.”
Michael walks out of the lab and back to his private office.  He dreads the call he must now make.

Chapter 19
As Tina unlocks the front door, her cell phone rings.  “Hey Pam.  Everyone arrive ok?”
Pam replies, “Yes we should be there shortly.”
“Great!”  Tina continues, “Hey I need you and Ellen to talk to the kids about something on the way.”  Tina proceeds to tell Pam about Hazel and Suzy staying at the house and how she wants the kids not to mention Cole and what they needs to do.
As Hazel and Suzy settle into their rooms, Tina plops down on the couch to think and rest.  After a few moments, Suzy come into the room.
“Hey Tina, level with me,” Suzy says as she sits down.  “You and my brother, you guys are back together, right?  I won’t tell mom.  I promise.”
Tina laughs.  “We discussed the idea but he’s working now so nothing definite.”
Suzy smiles.  “That ring tells me you did more than discuss it.  Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.”  Suzy winks at Tina as Hazel walks in.
“Tina dear, you are so kind,” Hazel says.  “Thank you for letting us stay.”
“Hazel, you are always welcome,” Tina replies.  “Ladies, I need to tell you both something.  While I was in Jamaica, I found myself at a local church that runs an orphanage.  There were these two precious kids, a brother and a sister that I fell in love with.  They had been through so much and I decided to adopt them.  My sister Pam just picked them up at the airport along with Ellen, who with her husband runs the orphanage.  They will be here shortly.  I hope you don’t mind.  Everything just happened all at once.”
Hazel smiles while Suzy looks stunned.  Finally Hazel speaks, “Wow Tina.  That is wonderful.  I can’t wait to meet them.  What are their names?”
Tina smiles, “Isaac is 3 and Laura is 9 months.  They are jewels.  They just captured my heart the first time I met them.”
Suzy perked up. “Has Cole met them?”
Tina shot her a look.  “Yes he has very briefly.  They all seemed to get along just fine.”
“I don’t really see him as the fatherly type,” Suzy laughs.
Just then the front door flings open and Isaac comes running in.
“Mommy,” he yells rushing to Tina.  He jumps up into her lap.  “I miss mommy!”
Tina grabs him and hugs him.  “Mommy miss Isaac.  Did you enjoy your plane ride?”
“Not really,” he replied.
“Why not sweetie?”
Isaac whispered in Tina’s ear so no one could hear, “I kept thinking Daddy won’t find me here.”
Tina laughs but then almost cries as she hugs him and replies, “That won’t be a problem.  I promise!”
Isaac smiles and points to Hazel and Suzy, “Who they?”
“This is my friend Hazel and Suzy.  They are staying with me for a few days.”
Isaac looks confused.  “What bout me, sissy and Nana Ellen?”
Tina laughs, “You are staying here too.  You and Laura will stay in my room and Nana Ellen will have her own room right next door.  Mrs. Hazel and Miss Suzy have their own rooms as well.”
Isaac’s eyes get big.  “Wow!  This big house!”
“Well why don’t you go check it out while we talk,” Tina says putting him down.
Isaac runs off to explore.  Tina stood to greet Ellen who was holding Laura.  She took Laura and kissed her and motioned Ellen to sit.
“Pam you gonna stay?”
Pam sits, “I can for a bit but then I better go.”
They were all talking when Tina’s cell phone rang. “Dr. Carpenter.  Yes please hold.”
Tina stood and handed Laura to Pam.  “Ellen, can you please come with me,” she said as she leaves the room.
Ellen quickly follows as Tina gets back on the phone in the master bedroom shutting the door behind Ellen.  “Michael please go ahead.  Ellen and the kids just got here.”
Michael continued.  “Tina, I don’t know where to start.  I never wanted to have to…”
Michael stopped.  There was silence.  Finally Tina spoke as she sat on the edge of the bed.  “Michael, please don’t say what I think you are about to say.”
More silence.  Michael speaks softly, “Tina, I’m sorry.  Officially he’s MIA but all signs point to the fact that he’s been killed.”
“NO!”  Tina screams as she drops the phone and falls to her knees.
Ellen picks up the phone as Pam comes running in and consoles her sister.  Tina is sobbing on the floor and crying out, “NO, Cole, No!”  Pam knows instantly what the call was.
“Michael, this is Ellen.  I know this wasn’t easy and you didn’t have to call her.  Thank you.”
Michael answers, “Ellen, I knew she needed to hear it from me.  Now I will call his family.”
Ellen replies, “Michael, his family is here at Tina’s.  You want to talk to them?”
Pam takes the phone, “Michael, this is Tina’s sister Pam.  I will take care of telling his family.  There is a lot going on here.”
“Thank you, Pam,” Michael says.  “I’ll call in a few days with official reports.”
Pam hangs up the phone and she and Ellen console Tina.  As they hug, Ellen prays for Tina, the kids, and also asks that if Cole is still alive God would protect and bring him back safely.  When Ellen finishes, Tina kisses her cheek and dries her eyes.  “Well, we’ve got a decision to make.  I don’t think we should tell the kids until we know for sure, but what about Hazel and Suzy?”  They have so much going on right now.”
Ellen speaks, “Yes dear they do but they deserve to know.  He’s their son and brother.  Michael said right now he is MIA until they have evidence.  Just tell them what he said.  They deserve that much.”
Pam speaks, “Ellen is right.  I will go with you and Ellen can keep the kids occupied.”
Pam helps Tina up and they walked out holding hands as Ellen gets Laura and goes to find Isaac.  Tina takes a deep breath.  As she enters the room, Hazel speaks up.”
“Everything ok dear?  We heard a scream”
Tina sits on the couch next to Hazel and begins to speak.  “I just got a call from Cole’s boss.”  Tina takes a deep breath trying to hold back the tears.  She sees Hazel’s face turn somber as if she knows what is coming.  Tina continues.  “Cole is officially MIA but all signs point to him being killed and that he would call when he had more information.”
Hazel has tears rolling down her face and Suzy just sits in shock.  After a bit of silence, Hazel begins to pray out loud.
“Father, If My Cole is still alive, please protect him and bring him back to us.  If he is not Father, please accept him into your hands.  Help us understand and keep us strong.  Protect and heal Matthew.  Your will be done in all.  Praise and Glory in your name, AMEN.”
Tina, Hazel, Suzy and Pam all hug and cry.  They sit that way for several minutes and then separate and sit in silence.  Pam finally somberly speaks.  “Tina, I hate to but I better get going.  I have to get up early and catch up on all my missed work.  Call me if you need me.  Anything!”  She hugs Tina, says bye to Hazel and Suzy and leaves.
Just as she leaves, Isaac comes running into the room.  “Mommy, it place great.  Me love it here.  Can’t wait daddy get home.”  Isaac stops as he jumps in Tina’s lap.  “Oops, me not pose to talk daddy.  Sorry mommy!”
Tina laughs as she hugs him.  “It’s ok sweetie!  Where’s Nana Ellen?”
“She put Laura night night.  I stay mommy.  Can I?”
Tina smiles at Hazel, “Tell you what.  Go put on your PJ’s and have Nana Ellen help you brush your teeth and I’ll read you a story.”
Isaac jumps down and runs out as he says “You got it!”
When he leaves, the silence is deafing.  Finally Hazel speaks up.  “You gonna tell him his daddy is MIA or you gonna wait til you know for sure?”
Tina smiles, “How did you know Cole is their daddy?”
“I knew something was up when I saw your reaction earlier when I asked about you and Cole.  It didn’t take long to put it together.  Just tell me I didn’t miss the wedding.”
Tina laughs as she takes a drink of water.  “No.  We decided to wait until this mission was over.  Now it may not happen at all.”  Tears well up in Tina’s eyes.
Hazel puts her arm around her.  “Tina, I know my Cole.  If you and these precious children is what he has to come back to, he will do everything in his power to do so.  He was never the same after you two called things off before.  We just have to keep hoping and praying for him.  We have to stay strong for those two babies.”
Tina plays with her ring.  “Yes I know.  He is so great with them.  I wish you could have seen him Hazel.  It was beautiful.”
Hazel kisses Tina’s forehead.  “I will soon sweetie.  I will.  Now, let’s take a look at this beautiful ring.  I see Cole has is father’s eye for jewelry.  Tell me the significance.”
Tina holds her hand up for Hazel to look.  “Well, the emerald of course is mine and Cole’s birthstone and for our perseverance of love.  The two small diamonds are for Isaac and Laura.  The band is inlaid with Jamaican black coral since that is where God brought us back together.”
Hazel kisses Tina’s hand, “You’ll see him again sweetie.  One way or another.”
Just then Isaac came running in.  “Mommy, ready.  Story!”  He jumps up in Tina’s lap.
“Alright but before we do that, I want to tell you something.  You know Mrs. Hazel.  She is your daddy’s mommy.  That makes her your grandmother.”
Isaac smiles a big smile.  “Wow.  Me lucky.  More family. What me call her?”
Tina smiles, “Maybe you should ask her.”
Isaac crawl over to Hazel’s lap.  “What call you?”
Hazel smiles.  “I have always liked GiGi.  How does that sound?”
Isaac hugs Hazel.  “Love GiGi!”
Hazel hugs Isaac.  “Love Isaac!”
Isaac kisses Hazel’s cheek and crawls back to Tina’s lap.  “Now story”
Tina smiles, “Not yet.  I have one more thing.  Suzy is daddy’s sister, Your Aunt.”
Isaac jumps down and runs to Suzy and hugs her.  “More Aunts, Wow!  Mommy would it be k if GiGi, Suzy stay for story?”
“Sure sweetie,” Tina says as Isaac climbs back up in her lap.  She opens the book and begins reading.
Before the story is half over, Isaac is fast asleep.  Tina closes the book and carefully picks him up and carries him to bed.
When Tina returns, she says “I think Isaac has the right idea.  We should all get a good night sleep.  The next few days could be very long and tiring. If you need anything, just let me know.”  They all hugs goodnight and head off to bed.
As Tina lays down, she once again kisses Isaac who is sound asleep in the bed next to her.  Laura stayed in bed with Ellen.  Tina rolls over and thinks about Cole.  Every time she closes her eyes, she sees his lifeless bloody body lying on the ground.  She begins to cry.
She buries her face in her pillow, trying not to wake Isaac.  She finally decides to move to the couch.  She grabs a blanket and pillow and settles in.  She again begins to cry, this time more uncontrollable than before.  She drops to her knees.
“Why, God?  Why?  Why would you bring him back into my life and then just up and take him away?  Why God?  I don’t deserve this!  What about those precious kids?  After all they have been through.  WHY!?!”
Tina buries her face in her hands.  Then she feels an arm around her.  She looks and sees Ellen kneeling next to her.  “I figured you might need a shoulder and a friend.”
Tina hugs Ellen. “Thank you.  I know I shouldn’t question but I just…”
Ellen interrupts.  “It’s ok sweetie.  We have to be honest with God and ourselves.  He knows you aren’t questioning Him or blaming Him.  You just want to know.  It’s natural.  Believe me I have been in your shoes.  I know exactly how you feel.”
Tina looked at Ellen in disbelief.  “What do you mean?”
Ellen and Tina sit back up on the couch as Ellen begins telling her story.
“I was engaged once before I met James.  We were high school sweethearts.  We both went to university together.  He was coming home late one night from work.  We had just graduated and were making final wedding plans for later that month.  He was driving home and was hit head on by another driver and was killed.  His injuries were so bad he was almost unrecognizable.”  Ellen had tears running down her face.  “I thought I’d never get over that.  I felt like I had died right along with him.  I even lived my life that way for a while.  Then one day, I walked into a small church and listened to young minister speaking about life and joy we have in Christ.  He quote from John 16:22 ‘So with you: now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take ways you joy!’  He then quoted Psalm 30:5 ‘Weeping may stay for the night but rejoicing come in the morning.’  I have to admit I wasn’t sure I believed it or if it even applied to me.  After the service, I asked to meet with someone.  It happened to be that same young minister.  I told him my story. He got me in touch with someone and I was able to work through things.  After several months, my joy was slowly being returned.  The next week I went back to the little church and spoke with the minster.  I invited him to lunch as a thank you for all his help.  That was James’ and mine first date.  We were married one year to the day of the car accident.  The Lord had turned my day of weeping into a day of joy!”
Tina sits stunned before finally speaking.  “Ellen, I had no idea.  Could you help me get through this?  I am not sure where to turn, except to God.”
Ellen smiles, “That’s the best place to start sweetie.  Yes, I will be here as long as I can.”  She wraps her arms around Tina and they sit back on the couch and finally cry themselves to sleep.

Chapter 20
Tina awakes to the smell of coffee and bacon.  She looks and sees Ellen in the kitchen cooking and talking to Hazel.  She gets up and walks to the coffee and pours a cup.  “Good morning ladies.”
“Good morning,” they both say.
“Smells wonderful Ellen.  Thank you so much.  The kids up yet?”
“Actually, they got kidnapped by their Aunt Pam for the morning.  They will be back by lunch.  Thought the three of us and Suzy could use some time.  Suzy is freshening up.  You have time if you’d like to as well.”
“I think I will.  Thanks.”  Tina gives Ellen a hug as she passes.
“God has special plans for that girl,” Ellen says as she leaves the room.
Hazel agrees, “Yes, He has wonderful plans for her and Cole.”
Ellen scoops bacon onto a plate.  “You think he’s still alive, don’t you?”
Hazel takes a drink of coffee.  “Yes.  A mother knows.  When Cole’s twin brother was born.  I had a feeling instantly and knew he wouldn’t survive.  Even when the doctors said he was fine.  I knew.”
“I didn’t know Cole was a twin,” Ellen says as she starts the eggs.
“Neither did I,” Hazel laughed.  “Back then we didn’t have all the fancy stuff they do now.  I didn’t even make it to the hospital with Cole.  He was born in the side room of the church.  His twin was backwards.  By the time I got to the hospital, he was in great distress and so was I.  They almost lost us both.  Finally they did a C-Section.  He was alive when they got him but I knew instantly he wouldn’t make it.  Mother’s intuition I guess.   Caleb Michael lived 7 days, 7 hours and 7 minutes.  My sweet perfection.  That’s when we took him off the machines and left it in the Lord’s hands.”
By now, Ellen was sitting with Hazel, holding her hand.  “I can’t imagine, but as you said a mother knows.  You hang on to that feeling, Hazel.  The Lord put it there.  Keep that hope alive.”
Just then, Tina comes in.  “Hazel, got some good news.  Dr. Gordon called and he says Michael is getting stronger and he is scheduling surgery for tomorrow morning.  Said he woke up this morning and asked for bacon and eggs.”
Hazel laughed.  “Good ‘ole Matthew.  Let’s eat and get over there.”
Ellen finishes making breakfast while Tina finished freshening up.  Just as Tina comes in, Ellen is serving things up.  Tina takes her seat between Ellen and Suzy.  They all hold hands as Ellen prays.
After they finish, Tina, Hazel and Suzy head to the hospital while Ellen stays to wait on the kids.  “Ellen, call my cell if you need anything.  If it off, all my office and have them page me.  The numbers are by the phone,” Tina says on her way out.
When Hazel enters Matthew’s room, he is giving the nurse taking his blood pressure a hard time.  “Don’t let him fool you sweetie.  He’s a big soft,” Hazel says walking towards him and gives him a kiss.
The nurse smiles.  “He may be but he’s been talking my ear off all morning.  Glad you’re here ma’am.”
“She just doesn’t want to listen,” Matt jokes.  “I told her the doctor order my bacon and eggs but she won’t give ‘em.”
“Too many bacon and eggs is probably what put you in here,” Hazel says as the nurse leaves.
“Speaking of this place,” Matt replies.  “Where is it?  This ain’t OUR hospital.”
Hazel smiles.  “You’re right.  I had you brought to a much better hospital by a friend of ours.”
Matt looks at her, “What friend do we know that has access to a fancy place like this?”
“Well,” Hazel answers.  “Here she comes with Suzy.  Let me introduce you to…”
Matt interrupts.  “Tina Carpenter as I live and breathe.  My My, the Lord just keeps blessing me today.”
Tina smiles, “That’s Dr. Carpenter to you buddy.”  She laughs and give him a hug.
“Oh sorry.  Dr. Carpenter.  How are you sweetie?”
“Been well.  Thank you.  Staying busy here, doing research and trying to heal the world.”
“Well just seeing you made me feel 100% better so you must be good at it,” he says with a wink.
When he does that, he reminds Tina of Cole.  It both makes her smile and want to cry.  She hesitates before speaking just to make sure she is composed.  “I do my best.  Now on to business.  Dr. Gordon is in surgery and won’t be around for at least an hour.  I need to go up and get some things done myself so I’ll be down when he is finished.  Hazel, I’ll leave it to you to decide what details to fill Matthew in on, if you know I mean.”  Tina smiles as she walks out the door.
Trudy looks up surprised as Tina walks into the office.  “Dr. Carpenter, I didn’t expect to see you today.  Everything ok?”
“Yes Trudy,” she replies.  “Thank you for asking.  I’ve got so much paperwork to do.  I thought I’d come catch up.  Could you please call the lab and have them call when they have the next round of test ready?  I’d like to be there.”
“Sure Doctor.  Anything else?”  Would you like a smoothie?”
“Smoothie?  No but I’d love some water.  I had too much coffee this morning,” Tina laughs.
“One cold bottle of water coming right up.  Oh and here are a couple of more new patient requests for you.  When you have time.”
Tina takes the papers from Trudy as she sits down at her desk.  “Thank you, Trudy.”
Tina looks at the request.  Three more families that want to be involved in the clinical trial.  That makes 75 already.  She can’t believe how many people really want this treatment.  She continues to work on paperwork for about an hour when Dr. Gordon calls.  “Hey Carp.  I am finally out of surgery.  I am heading to Matthew’s room.  Meet me there,” he says.
“Sure Larry,” she answers.  “I’ll be right there.”  Tina buzzes Trudy.  “I am going down to meet Dr. Gordon about a patient.  If the lab calls, tell them to hold off until I get back and then page me.”
“Yes Doctor,” Trudy replies.
Tina heads down to Matthew’s room.  She arrives just after Dr. Gordon.
“There’s my beautiful Doctor,” Matthew says as she enters.  “No offense Dr. Gordon but I’d much rather have her be my doctor,” he laughs.
“Well Mr. Connor, she almost could have been.  Carp here could have been one of the best cardiac doctor’s in the world but instead chose to go the more noble route of pediatric diseases.”
Tina smiles as she hugs Hazel.  “Yes, some of us actually have to work for a living Larry rather than have all the glitz and glamor of a heart surgeon.”
Doctor Gordon shoots Tina a look, “Harsh words there Carp.”  He gives her a wink.  “Now let’s get to our patient.  Matthew, we have a few tests we want to run today since you are awake.  If all goes well, this time tomorrow, I should be finishing up your surgery.  Ready to get started?”
Matthew sighs.  “Doc, be honest with me.  Is all this necessary?  I mean in the long run what difference is it gonna make?”
Doctor Gordon walks over to Suzy.  “Well Matthew, I hear this beautiful lady is getting married soon.  You want to walk her down the aisle don’t you?  Soon she’ll probably have you a few grandkids.  You want to be able to enjoy them and play and spoil them, right?  This surgery is the difference in you being able to do all of that.  If all goes well in just a few short months your quality of life will go up, I promise.  Heck you might even fell 30 again.  Now, there are risks.  I will go over those after these tests but I am sure you will agree, as well as you beautiful doctor here that the benefits far outweigh those risks.”
Matthew takes Suzy’s hand.  “I guess those are pretty good benefits.  Doctor Carpenter?”
“I agree,” she says.  “He’s the best.  I’d believe him.”
“Ok, its settled then,” Matthew says.  “Let’s do it!”
Doctor Gordon smiles.  “Great!  I’ll go get the tests ready.  You guys visit.  Carp can you come help me please?”
Doctor Gordon and Tina walk down the hall.  Finally Doctor Gordon stops, “Carp, is something bothering you?  Somethings different”
Tina looks at him.  “You always could read me like a book.  It’s Cole.  He’s…he’s…he’s…missing.”  Tina takes a deep breath to keep from breaking down.  “We had all these plans, the kids but now…it could all be gone.”
Doctor Gordon hugs her.  “Carp, you need a night off.  Why don’t you come over tonight?  Bess is really wanting to talk to you.  Just come over, have some of that girl talk you both are so good at.  What do you say?”
“She really did help me the last time but I have Hazel and Suzy and Ellen and the kids all at my place.  I couldn’t.”
“Gosh Carp, I knew you had Matthew’s family at your place but who are the others?”
Tina smiles.  “It’s a long story Larry.  I don’t think it would be right.  Maybe later.”
“Carp,” Doctor Gordon pleads, “you need time for you.  Look at least meet us for drinks after dinner.  We can even meet over as that place by you.  Just name the time.  Come on.”
“Ok Larry.  Drinks, but after the kids go to bed.  Say 9:30 at Pebbles?”
“Sounds great.  We will be there.  Don’t you dare change your mind. Now, I have some tests to set up.  See you later.”
Just as Doctor Gordon leaves, Tina’s pager goes off.  She looks and realizes the lab is ready.  She catches the elevator.
